I decided to uninstall the SmartWare app and have checked that this no longer appears in my Applications folder. However, this was superfluous to me as I run Time Machine to a WD 1TB Studio external HDD, which is always attached to my iMac. Opening it pulled up the WD SmartWare tabbed window and it went through the process of seemingly reading the hard disk and providing a graph-like readout of the different types of files. The new version of SmartWare seemed to enable me to backup my computer to a WD external drive. Neither of these has been connected since moving to Mavericks).
(I did not want to find my other two older WD drives losing information. I, therefore, downloaded the up to date version of WD SmartWare, having read that this would fix “an issue related to reports of some customers, under certain conditions, experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9)”.
